Making a sacrifice is forgetting about the self. It is taking time away from worry, fear, anxiety and pain. It is becoming busy doing and being someone who makes a difference in the world.  ImageSacrifice is the ability to give away to another with no expectation that anything will happen other than the opportunity of being of help to another.  When we offer service to others it is a space of sharing and many times there is an expectation of receiving something in return; that’s why getting a haircut, eating in a restaurant or having the oil changed in our car are called services.

Selflessness requires courage.  This is because sacrifice and selflessness are based on loving another more than we love ourselves.  But if we are not meeting our own needs for comfort, safety, affection, and happiness it isn’t possible to make a true sacrifice.  Not caring for our needs and worrying about the needs of others is a form of martyrdom and emotional enslavement.  It arises from the belief that we can only be happy if we make everyone around us happy.

True Sacrifice is the ability to exchange oneself for another- to be with others where they are instead of where we wish them to be. Image If someone is sad it is more of a sacrifice to sit with them in their grief than to attempt a healing in order for us to feel better about where they are.  With sacrifice we learn to be a compassionate witness to another’s journey through life, supporting and validating how they feel and what is happening for them at the time.

Sacrifice arises from devotion.  This is devotion to Great Spirit, to a spiritual master, or guru.  It is seeing a need and being drawn to fill that need because one sees the face of the Beloved Spiritual Master in the suffering countenance of that brother or sister.  We do not practice sacrifice to change the world, we practice sacrifice to heal ourselves.

Beloved Mother & Father Spirit-
If I have wounded any soul this day
Or caused someone’s fear, anger or pain
If I have walked too strongly in my own will and way
Great Spirit forgive me

If I have spoken ill of anyone
If I have turned aside from want or pain
or caused another to suffer for my comfort
Great Spirit forgive me.

If I have envied joys that are not mine
If I have sought to be loved rather than to love,
or thought too long on world gate desires
Great Spirit forgive me

If I have been perverse, hard or cold, ignoring the needs of others
while longing to shelter in your arms
Great Spirit forgive me
Forgive me the things I clearly see
Forgive me the things I cannot see
Teach me and help me to love, to share, and to forgive.

Beginner’s Mind

It appears easy for children to learn. One of the advantages they have that an adult loses is the knowledge of, and expectation that, they will make mistakes before learning what they wish to master.children-learning

What do you wish to master?
Can you allow yourself to try again and again and get it wrong?
What is the time frame in which you expect to experience this mastery?
Is that really do-able?
How teachable do you think you are?

Almost every day we have the opportunity to learn something new.  This can be very simple such as  tasting  a food we’ve not tried before, driving to work down a different street, or getting new software for our electronic devices.   Life in the physical world is a process of growing, changing, and learning. When we cease to learn we cease to be truly alive.  dogAs we grow older some individuals find it hard to learn. This is because true learning means practicing a skill until we make it our own.  It means making mistakes and trying again. An old dog can be taught new tricks because an old dog is willing. A human, no matter what age, can’t be taught anything they are unwilling to learn.

True ignorance is believing we already know all of the answers.  Many times we might feel stupid, ignorant, or slow because we cannot put into practice the truths of spirit, or some spiritual teaching we’ve received in meditation. What this lack of understanding means is that we are still teachable.

Our cultural and religious belief systems tell us that we must strive to be perfect in all ways, mentally, emotionally, and physically.   It behooves a person to attain such a state or at least pretend to attain perfection in order to be thought of as spiritual. What all the great masters and saints have known, however, is that they were ignorant and in need of Divine Guidance. Let us joyfully accept that we do not know so that we may continue to learn, to grow, and to become more.

I open myself to Great Spirit’s Purpose
Let the dust and mud of painful thoughts be washed away in the joyful grace of love
I will remember that nothing can be totally eliminated
If I melt something, it just becomes something else.
Let me melt into something else!
I am open to melting into love
I am obedient to Spirit’s grace
I am clay with your hands, Beloved!
Make me into something you will be proud to call your own.

A Blessed Life

If we look at the world around us we see many souls who are without spiritual guidance, who long for a true relationship with Great Spirit- for someone to see them, hear them, and believe in them.  suffering2Do you know twenty people, or more, who are suffering?  Do you know people who have no hope that their suffering will end?  This is a sad but very experience common in the world now.

Spend a little time becoming aware of what you have in your life and in your heart.  Focus on your relationship to Great Spirit Mother and Father seeing the many ways you have been blessed with healing and hope.  Who would you be if you had never had the experiences of love, sharing, healing, and goodness that abound in your life?  When we become aware of what we have in our heart, in our family, in our life we desire to serve Great Mother & Great Father seeking an ending to all this suffering.  gratitudeWhen we find our gratitude we try to help others.  Many times we won’t be successful, but we can try anyway!

Wherever we go let us know that the Metta (loving kindness) is possible, that others can have these things, even as we have these things.  It’s easy to join the world- to be afraid, needy, and filled with the desire for many things.  But when we have love inside of us we understand what real joy is.  When we relax and bring our mind and heart to a place of peace we become free.  We can just sit and feel what we feel and then return our mind to the breath- letting go of all those other troublesome things.  If we align our lives in this way we begin to be happy and our inner demons are diminished.

So how do we reach through the noise of illusion and distraction to touch other’s hearts?  sharing-love-handsWe look into their eyes and speak to them.  We listen and really be present.  We discover what makes them a unique expression of Spirit grace. We offer this as a sanctuary.  We allow our blessed life to touch another’s life with blessings also.

The Metta

May all beings have good air to breathe.
May all beings have fresh, clean water to drink.
May all beings have food and a home.
May all beings share love with someone.
May all beings know their true purpose,
Be well and happy,
And free from suffering.
Today I shall do what I can to make this so.
